The 2008 iShares Cup Sailing Series has been shortlisted in two categories for the prestigious European Sponsorship Awards. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony, part of ESA's Future Sponsorship conference in Brussels, on 20 November. The ESA awards are the only pan-European sponsorship awards celebrating excellence across the various sectors of sport, culture, entertainment, media and corporate social responsibility. The iShares Cup European series, which this summer visited five European countries, has been shortlisted in both the Business to Business and International categories. The ESA Business to Business category is for sponsorship projects directed at a sponsor's business partners, clients and distributors, while the international accolade is for projects which reach a minimum of three different countries and which reflect activity based within at least one European market. The iShares Cup is up against some stiff competition in both categories, including Accenture's silver sponsorship of Skandia Team GBR, BT Team Ellen, and the Friends Provident Trophy (Business category) and Castrol's UEFA Euro2008 Sponsorship, Team Visa Beijing 2008 and The Artemis Transat 2008 (in the International category). Reaching the shortlist is remarkable for an event that was only launched in 2007, but the 2008 iShares Cup series saw this hottest new property in sailing achieve new levels of visibility: 'With 10 top-level teams competing, including some of the most famous sailors in the sport, the iShares Cup secured its position as a credible event on the world's sailing calendar,' commented OC Events director, Gilles Chiorri. 'Over 150,000 spectators witnessed the iShares Cup racing first-hand, achieving the objective of truly bringing sailing to the public in a new and innovative way. The 2008 iShares Cup also surpassed its media targets, attracting television, print and internet coverage projected to be worth over Euros 4.5million across five key territories,' he concluded (source: Sports Marketing Surveys).
