Ships ahoy! Join us for an open day that delves into the history of ship building, the science of steam and life and death on the high seas! Our program includes informative behind-the-scenes tours to view a selection of rare ship models (see tour details below), a demonstration showing the intricacies of model ship making by Gary Renshaw and talks on the SS Orsova and the Triple Expansion Steam Engine.

We are excited to be hosting a fascinating lecture on the sinking of the RMS Titanic by UNSW Senior Lecturer, Sarah Gregson, and international best-selling author, Kathryn Fox, gives an insight into researching disappearances on cruise liners for her latest crime fiction novel, Cold Grave. Our younger visitors will enjoy learning about nautical knots and getting crafty with our popular marine-themed make-and-do activities.

Tour Details:

Behind-the-Scenes Museum Tour
Model Ships in the Collection
11.00am, 12.30pm or 2.30pm (Duration: 60 minutes)

$16 adult / $10 concession, members (includes general admission). Spaces are strictly limited to a maximum of 12 participants per tour, pre-booking is essential. Limited to visitors aged 12+ years. Conditions apply.

Model making is a very meticulous process, sometimes taking years to complete one single scale model. Come behind-the scenes to view highlights of the Powerhouse Museum’s extensive, world-class collection of ship models stored at Castle Hill. Highlights of the tour include the Henri Grace a-Dieu, the Kalang, the SS Turbinia, the HMS King George V, the HMS Sirius, the PSS Great Eastern, the HM Bark Endeavour, and the Loch Vennachar, a miniature ship in a bottle. Participants will also have the opportunity to take a sneak peek at the restoration work currently being undertaken on the steel hulled yacht, Ice Bird, and learn about the exciting story of adventurer and Australian explorer, Dr. David Lewis, who purchased Ice Bird in 1972 for his heroic voyage to Antarctica.
