NSW Govt survey to reveal recreational fishing facts
|
Fisheries NSW is undertaking a state-wide survey of recreational fishing in NSW which will provide a range of information necessary for managing our valuable fisheries resources. In 2000-01, NSW participated in the National Recreational and Indigenous Fishing Survey (NRIFS). This survey provided an important benchmark in the assessment of recreational fishing in NSW and found that over 1 million NSW residents participated in recreational fishing. The survey also showed that recreational fishing is an important activity in terms of social and economic benefits to the community. However, since the 2000-01 survey there have been many changes to recreational fisheries in NSW. For example, changes to bag and size limits, introduction of Recreational Fishing Havens and the growth in new fishing technologies have led to a different recreational fishery to that of over a decade ago. The 2013-14 survey will use a similar methodology to the 2000-01 survey, which will enable us to measure any changes in the recreational fishery that may have occurred since that time and will improve our understanding of recreational fishing in NSW. The success of the survey relies heavily on the co-operation of the recreational fishing community. So whether you fish regularly or only occasionally, please help out if you are contacted, because the information collected will be of immense value in providing a sustainable recreational fishery into the future. The 2013-14 survey will measure the number of NSW residents who go recreational fishing, where and how often they fish and what they catch. The survey will also include residents from the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The survey is designed to provide reliable estimates of: • fishing participation rates of NSW and ACT residents among various subgroups (e.g. age, gender, area of residence) • state-wide and regional annual catch (harvest and release), fishing effort (days and hours fished) and catch rates for many popular species • other recreational fishing-related data (e.g. boat ownership, fishing club membership) • fishers' awareness and opinions on various fisheries-related issues For more information visit www.dpi.nsw.gov.au
