NSW Maritime Boating Service Officers on Friday began a week-long (22-29 August) training course at Soldiers Point, Port Stephens, according to General Manager Recreational Boating Brett Moore.

Mr Moore said 15 Boating Service Officers from across NSW would be put through the refresher course to ensure high standards are maintained in compliance and investigation procedures.  

“Every four years on a rotation basis Boating Service Officers undergo a refresher course on marine compliance and legislation,” he said.

“NSW Maritime Boating Service Officers are spread statewide and are at the frontline of the effort to promote a culture of safety on our waterways.

“Last year, Maritime Boating Service Officers conducted more than 40,000 on-water safety checks on boats and were involved numerous investigations.

“This course is part of an ongoing effort by NSW Maritime to ensure effective procedures are in place to serve and protect the boating community.”

The seven-day compliance program has an emphasis on the practical aspects of the duties of a Boating Service Officer particularly in marine and environmental legislation, and the skills to gather and present evidence in court.

The program is designed to also certify new compliance officers and as refresher training and re-certification for existing compliance officers.

The final day of the course is in a mock court and is the culmination of extensive classroom and on-water activities conducted under the watchful eye of the Senior Boating Service Officers and NSW Maritime legal staff.

The mock court is held at Raymond Terrace courthouse.
