Marine protection zones threatens fish boom and seafood price hike

'Bull shark - numbers of sharks and fish will explode if marine ’no take’ zones are introduced.'    .
Eight 'no take' marine protection zones will lead to an explosion in shark numbers and an equally shocking explosion in the cost of fresh seafood, claim experts.

The warning from fishing proponents and the seafood industry comes in response to the possible establishment of the eight 'no take' marine protection zones in Commonwealth waters from Torres Strait to Southern NSW. Gold Coast media personality and long-time fisher, Paul Burt said if fishing were banned in waters off the Tweed, more sharks would inevitably breed and be drawn to the area.

'A lot of shark attacks occur where the marine parks are situated,' he said. 'The fish life flourishes so much that it does become an uncontrollable habitat.'

The end result in those 'uncontrollable habitats' was an increased number of fish and the sharks which went with them, he said.

Gold Coast seafood industry veteran Peter Peters, who owns Peter's Fish Market at Main Beach, said further limiting where commercial vessels could fish may put wild seafood out of the reach of ordinary Australians.
'I would say it would definitely double the price because the fishermen won't be catching as much, their costs of travelling extra distances will go up and that will be passed on,' he said.

Commercial and recreational anglers raised their own concerns of financial and safety risks associated with the zone proposals.

Gold Coast local Keith Williams, who is running as a Queensland senate candidate for the Australian Fishing and Lifestyle Party, said the flagged marine protection zones would also put further pressure on areas where fishing was allowed.

'If they closed down the Fraser or Tweed Coasts like they're talking about, all those fishermen and crabbers have got to go elsewhere,' he said.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett's office said there has been no decision made as yet on the eight zones being considered as marine protection areas. Public consultation on the proposals would continue if Labor retains power following the August 21 election.
