Welcome to another week! Good news for manufacturers and mixed for consumers, with the interest rates tumbling for the first time in years and a soft Aussie dollar. Not so great for people who’ve planned OS travel for Christmas, but according to the latest ACNielsen survey, great for spending in the lead up to the festive season.

Along with news of the most recent consumer sentiment, we feature the latest in technology offered by NZ firm Urban Voyage, which allows its superyacht clients to contribute to and monitor the design process, as well as details of the revised rezoning plan for Moreton Bay, announced by Qld premier Anna Bligh over the weekend.

16% of the area that stretches from Caloundra to the Gold Coast Seaway will be off limits to recreational and commercial fishing under a new zoning plan starting next year, much to the concern of fishers who forecast that more than one quarter of businesses will be forced to close and the cost of local seafood will rise.

But perhaps the biggest story this week relates to the NMMA decision to reassess its plans for Grow Boating in the US, as a consequence of the tough economic times. It will now focus its efforts on manufacturer-specific promotions and its core programs, which we detail in depth.

On a positive note, there’s good news from Victorian dealer, Aussie Boat Sales, with owner Scott O’Hare reporting better than expected sales in several segments, as well as optimism for the Melbourne Summer Boat Show. He shares his views on what’s impacting sales and how he plans to capitalize on an anticipated surge in spending.

We’re in for a summer of climatic extremes, according to BOM. Sudden storms are a harrowing experience if you’re on the water when they strike. Did you know Australia is one of the world’s top five of cyclone sites? Have you ever wondered about those fanatics who actually chase storms? If you have, take a look at the piece on storm chasers. Maybe you’ll view these natural phenomena in a different way, or maybe you’ll just check the forecast and stay home.

Thanks for all your news and keep the feedback coming.
