A visit to the Gold Coast this week from Gyeongnam Province Governor Tae Ho Kim is expected to increase opportunities for Queensland's marine businesses.

In the wake of a successful inaugural Korea Boat Show, Governor Kim's two-day visit to Queensland (Monday 30 June - Tues 1 July) is an additional facet to the Queensland-Korea relationship. KIBS was held in Gyeonggi Province, 10-15 June.

This visit aims to build on the recent trade mission led by Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations, John Mickel and AIMEX, along with representatives of 15 Queensland marine businesses to attend the inaugural Korea International Boat Show, June 11 to15.

'Governor Kim is a strong advocate and leader in the development of marine industries and infrastructure in Korea. His visit is an opportunity for Queensland to become further involved in servicing the current exponential growth in the development of a recreational boating industry and marine infrastructure in Korea,' Mickel said.

'The visit to Queensland will include the signing today of a major Queensland-Gyeongnam agreement focusing on the marine industry.

'Gyeongnam has eight marina development projects worth US$210m to be undertaken over the next decade, representing significant opportunities for Queensland's highly skilled, competitive and reliable businesses specialising in boat building as well as marine infrastructure, accessories, education and management.

Mickel said that the visit also includes meetings with businesses and a state-based education provider to investigate and confirm other agreements that will help to further advance Korea's marine capabilities in Gyeongnam Province.

'Governor Kim met yesterday with the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE, and attended a welcome function in Brisbane last night including further Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signings involving Gold Coast based Superior Jetties and the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.'
