Food security crucial - AMA applauds Farmers' blue print
|
The Australian Marine Alliance (AMA) is urging policy makers to develop a more sophisticated and integrated policy platform toward food security, coinciding with the launch of the Blueprint for Australian Agriculture last week by the National Farmers Federation (NFF). Dean Logan, AMA CEO argued, 'We are thrilled to be invited to attend today’s National Press Club launch of the NFF Blue Print for Australian Agriculture and applaud the NFF for taking this courageous step in what is a crucial year for policy reform.' The AMA is working closely with the NFF to deliver a sophisticated, integrated and industry wide policy platform toward food security and primary production. This is evidenced by the NFF and AMA hosting arguably the largest round table of industry CEOs ever assembled, across the fishing (recreational / professional) marine and agriculture sectors, later this month in Canberra. Mr Logan continued, 'Primary production and food security are major challenges that in our view have been completely neglected by Government. The flow on effect in our respective sectors has been a gutted industry, the loss of thousands of jobs and the demise of hundreds of allied businesses of who rely on, or integrate with, the farmers of the sea. 'In our view Government must do better. Importing over 70% of our total seafood requirement is policy and leadership failure, no matter how you look at it. 'As an example, seafood, fishing and the harvesting of the marine environment is almost completely neglected in the Gillard Government’s Australia in the Asian Century White Paper. 'Industry has a role to play and we are playing it. The NFF blueprint is a great start and a courageous step forward to getting this right,' said Mr Logan. More at www.australianmarinealliance.com.au
