First points to Lowana Five in Audi Victoria Week’s Trailerable series

Franck Gicquiaud
Simon Vaughan’s RL24 Lowana Five braved today’s blustery winds on Corio Bay to claim a win in the opening race of the BIA Trailerable Yacht Series, which is part of the 166th Audi Victoria Week.

While the rest of the Audi Victoria Week entries were beating into a southerly headwind in the Passage Race, the trailerable yachts got one race away on the Bay after the first attempt was abandoned.

'We got ahead on the first reach. While we had to work hard to hold it, we carried a spinnaker while the others didn’t. We took a risk and it paid off. We got a big lead then managed to hold onto it,' said Vaughan, a Sydney based owner/skipper who has been sailing RLs since he was 12.

He says the trailerable class competing at Audi Victoria Week is generally made up of guys whose parents owned RLs in the 1980s. 'We have really great racing between us.'

Today he beat Peter Kalin’s Noelex 25 Plane Sailng and Terry Caldwell’s sistership Pisces in the series opener.

The BIA Trailerable Yacht Series comprises six scheduled races and will be decided next Tuesday, 26 January.
