Emirates Team New Zealand has moved up to second on the leader board after three days of the Audi MedCup Cartagena regatta, sailed in Spain. Three races were held today. The breeze, as forecast, was light and shifty, struggling to reach 10 knots With a fifth, fourth and a third finish today, NZL 380 is on 18 points, eight behind TeamOrigin and one point ahead of third placed Matador. Today’s results increased the team’s lead on the season championship leader board to 40.5 points over Quantum Racing. Emirates Team New Zealand had a better day on the water than Quantum and Artemis which both picked up 16 points, compared to NZL 380’s 12. Artemis, which won the Barcelona regatta last month, slipped to fourth on the season leader board, allowing TeamOrigin to slip past. Progress for Emirates Team New Zealand is slow, but steady, which reflects the improvement this year throughout the fleet. Boat speed is even and crews are sailing much better. Skipper Dean Barker says, 'The fleet is very competitive. Like everyone else here, we have to scrape for every point. Crews have had to contend with the light and shifty breeze and the current – and a red-hot fleet. 'Doing well at Cartagena is coming down to getting a good start and capitalising on any opportunity. We are sailing a low-risk strategy – we don’t need a 10th finish or a dsq (disqualification). 'Origin is sailing well and has dominated this regatta so far. We’re eight points behind them so they’re not out of reach. 'We’re happy enough to be second at Cartagena and extending our lead for the season, but that doesn’t mean we’re happy with our performance. Every day we leave the dock determined to improve.' The weather forecast for tomorrow is for a medium to strong offshore breeze. It will be shifty. Caja Mediterráneo Region of Murcia Trophy Day 3 1. TeamOrigin (GBR), 3+1+3+2+1= 10 points 2.
