Christmas comes early to Southport Yacht Club

Southport Yacht Club on Queensland's Gold Coast was packed with families, members of all ages and inclinations Saturday 22 December, enjoying a sultry evening of Christmas carols, face painting, excellent food and bev, lots of festive spirit, and the arrival of the fat man in the red suit, delivered by boat helmed by Commodore, Ian Hall, as a precursory visit before his Australian run.
Kids squealed with delight, adults with relief, when Santa appeared tootling in to shore, with a heavy sack in tow, and plenty of perspiration in the 29C heat at 5.30pm. They set upon him, poor chap. But he maintained his good humour and the line was orderly as they demanded their lolly bags and stated their wish lists (iPads were prevalent) for 24th December delivery.
A local choir warbled the traditional song list and guests and members tucked in to an Aussie barbie banquet or seafood a la carte, washed down with coldies of every sort in the sweltering heat.
There was a raffle and prizes for the kids, games on the sand and yes, the occasional tantrum . . . all part of the chaos and familial joy of this special time of year.
A vibrant calendar of events is on offer at SYC over summer, and all year round, including upcoming lunch with David Hill for the Queensland launch of his latest book, 'The Great Race', Friday 15 February 2013. Just $49 per ticket which includes lunch and the great camaraderie SYC is known for!
