AMP Abseil for Youth - Simon Denneen to descend from top of AMP Tower

This Friday, 19 October, Newport local Simon Denneen, a volunteer from the Marine Rescue NSW, finally straps on a harness in the AMP Abseil for Youth. Depending just on a very strong rope, Denneen faces his fear of heights on a breathtaking descent down the outside Sydney’s first skyscraper, the AMP Tower. Simon will abseil the 115 metres from the top of the iconic Circular Quay building which turns 50 this year, to raise funds and awareness for the youth in crisis and as a support to the Sir David Martin Foundation charity (SDMF).

'Marine Rescue NSW is a community based volunteer organisation that knows the importance of raising funds to help our work of saving lives on the water. We believe it is just as important to give back to the community by helping very worthy causes like the Sir David Martin Foundation and I am very glad to be making a contribution,' said Simon.

Now in its third year and made possible with the ongoing support of AMP, the abseil this year is focused on people’s fears. Descending from the top of one of Sydney’s tallest buildings evokes a fear amongst even the most hardened thrill seekers but it is a momentary one in comparison to the fear of those going through SDMF’s flagship program, Triple Care Farm, where participants face a myriad of personal, emotional and physical challenges.

'While the fear I experience will be very real, it will be brief and it doesn’t compare with the chronic fear experienced every day by youths who have been marginalised by circumstance. As I teeter on the edge I hope to spare a thought for those less fortunate than me. At the bottom I will no doubt be euphoric – not only at having overcome my fear but also that the contribution I make, along with the other abseilers’ contributions, will make a big difference,' said Simon.

Simon will be assisted by the Sir David Martin Foundation’s ambassador, Andrew Lock, one of Australia’s most accomplished high altitude mountaineers and the first Australian to climb all 14 – 8000 metre plus summits of the world’s highest mountains, including Mt Everest.

Darren will also be in distinguished company with Olympian Sally Pearson present to offer support. The Minister for Citizenship and Communities with responsibility for Youth Affairs, Victor Dominello, Underbelly star, Josh Quong Tart, celebrity gardener Brendan Moar and former Miss Australia, Caroline Pemberton - will all be facing their own fears at the top of the AMP building in support of Sir David Martin Foundation.

All the funds Simon raises will be donated to the Sir David Martin Foundation’s Triple Care Farm Program, which provides a proven, successful environment of peace and healing for emotionally hurt and troubled young people aged 16 to 24.

He has already reached his original fundraising target of $1500 and has now set his sights higher to make his donation even greater. Add your support.
